The Australian Greens today renewed calls for the Montara wellhead oil spill inquiry to look into the impacts of oil contamination within Indonesian waters.

"This should be a major part of the planned inquiry into this disaster, as it could drastically impact those fishing communities whose livelihood depend on their ability to fish in clean waters," said Senator Rachel Siewert.

"I'm very concerned to see reports that the University of Indonesia have found oil in Indonesian waters that can be traced back to the Montara spill. We were pushing very hard for Australian and Indonesian government action when we first started getting these reports from Indonesian fishermen several months ago."

"In fact, I was sent samples of oil-contaminated water from Indonesia, which I have sent on to be analysed as part of the Australian Government Commission of Inquiry into the leak," said Senator Siewert.

"I urge the Australian government to ensure that those samples are analysed properly and taken into account. Australia needs to be taking this seriously, and hold some accountability for the possible spread of this spill into our nearest neighbours' waters."

"This latest report of a possible confirmed link to Montara proves yet again that the inquiry should be looking into the impact on Indonesian waters," she concluded.
