A useless housing budget

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 10 May 2017
The number of people who are homeless and the number struggling to buy their first home will increase under the Liberal-National budget, Greens housing spokesperson Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

“The Turnbull government has only offered superficial solutions to the housing crisis. There are fourteen supposed housing affordability measures in this budget, but none of them will do much to make housing more affordable.

“Any housing plan that does not reform negative gearing and the capital gains discount is a sham.

“The only real change to negative gearing in this budget is that people can no longer deduct the cost of their travel to visit their investment properties. What a joke.
“The proposal for buyers to divert savings into their super account will prop up skyrocketing prices. Slapping a fee on foreign investors for leaving properties vacant but leaving domestic investors alone is cowardly dog-whistling.

“The ongoing funding for homelessness services is a welcome relief, but the figure needs to be increased considerably.

“The vicious attacks against students and people on income support in this budget will make housing even more out of reach for so many people,” Senator Rhiannon said.
