Tax deductible mortgages would be doubling down on a failed housing strategy
By putting tax deductible mortgages on the table, the Coalition has revealed it’s more interested in propping up its mates in the real estate industry than helping with housing affordability, said Greens housing spokesperson Senator Rhiannon.
“We know that the subsidies provided to home buyers have failed to assist those trying to buy their first home. Home ownership rates have continued to fall, particularly for young people,” said Senator Rhiannon.
“Pumping more capital into the housing market is doubling down on a strategy that we know is contributing to the household debt and affordability crisis.
“Coming after the government failed to come up with a single recommendation in the 2016 home ownership inquiry, it is clear this government is now just trying to distract from the real problems of negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount,” said Senator Rhiannon.
