Greens stand against Reclaim Australia, racism and Islamophobia, for multicultural society

Media Release
Lee Rhiannon 22 Nov 2015

Today thousands of anti-racist protestors across the country demonstrated against protests by the ‘Reclaim Australia' group.

"Racism and Islamophobia have no place in our communities," Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said.

"Across the country today, from Melton in west Melbourne to Martin Place in Sydney, anti-racist protestors have come together to demonstrate against racism and Islamophobia.

"The Greens support those who speak out against racism and stand with all people who are striving to ensure that our communities are safe, supportive places for all.

Greens NSW multicultural spokesperson Dr Mehreen Faruqi said, "Recently we have seen members of the far right, conservative media commentators and some politicians capitalise on terrible tragedies in order to whip up Islamophobia and other forms of racism.

"All politicians should speak out against displays of Islamophobia and racism. It has no place in our society. It is oppressive, it is dangerous, and it is wrong."

"We need to stand together against those who would try and undermine our multicultural society for their narrow political interests," Dr Faruqi said.
