The Greens say the NSW Government rescue package for community legal centres is welcome news, but that the federal government also needs to restore the funding it has stripped from CLCs.

Greens NSW Senator Lee Rhiannon said, “Community legal centres across NSW like the Redfern Legal Centre in Sydney, the Elizabeth Evatt Legal Centre in Katoomba, the Illawarra Legal Centre and Women’s Legal Service NSW have been bracing themselves for the devastating impact of the Turnbull government’s cuts.

“This will be a relief for them and for the community legal sector in NSW but it shouldn’t be up to state governments to fix Senator Brandis’ mess.

“This announcement is a credit to the strong community campaign to restore essential funding to CLCs. Essential legal services should not have to fight for their right to exist.

“Community legal centres are already turning away thousands people each year, as the federal government refuses to properly fund invaluable services that help vulnerable and disadvantaged people.

“Everyone deserves legal representation and everyone deserves justice – not just the rich,” Senator Rhiannon said.
